Traditionally, nerf bars were offered in a polished "mirror-like" finish, but many manufacturers are now offering their nerf bars in a black 'satin like' or even a black 'high gloss' finish. The black finish might be from either powder coating or from the color of the ABS plastic.
Newer formulations of powder coating allow for a REALLY tough finish that will hold up under rough conditions much longer than early formulations. Some manufacturers have an under layer of e-coating and also are acid dipped for even greater protection.
Another nice thing about the black nerf bars is that you really don't need to keep them polished, like you might have to with the chrome plated or the mirror finish stainless steel nerf bars.
Black nerf bars are rarely made out of stainless steel, but if they are, you can expect to pay quite a bit more for those. Mild steel is just fine if you are looking for a black finish. BUT, if you really want a quality black nerf bar, then black powder coated stainless would be your best choice.
Another note, is that there is no appreciable difference in the strength between black nerf bars or chrome plated nerf bars. However, stainless nerf bars will typically be quite a bit stronger.
